Originally known as Santa Catalina, this mill commemorates Carlos González Caraballo Barnet who
was born in Navajas in 1916.  He studied at the Jesuit College in Cienfuegos and after schooling
returned to work with his father in the family’s pharmacy in Cruces as well as working in Central
Caracas for several years.  Following the coup by General Baptista he became increasingly radicalised
and joined the 26 July Movement.   He helped the rebel cause by selling bonds, supplying medicine and
providing medical assistance.  On 6 December he set out to collect arms, ammunition and medicines
that still remained hidden at a rebel hideout but was intercepted, severely beaten and transferred to
the police station in the village.   He was collected by the army who took him a short way from the
village soaked him in petrol and set him on fire resulting in his death at the age of 42.
One of the more ironic comments from Cuban workers was " ... the
government pretends to pay us and we pretend to work ....." and given
that the average monthly salary was less than the equivalent of US$10,
plus a bag of rice and beans, one perhaps could not blame the sugar mill
staff for working at something less than flat out!

Our first visit in May 1997 found almost no activity with Baldwin 2-6-0
No.1550 (built 1920) out of use on a weed infested track (above)

However by the time we returned again in early April the engine had
been returned to steam and cane was being cut and brought back to
the mill for processing (left)
There is a degree of almost
inevitability that if an engine is out
of use at the mill it will be standing
in full sunshine whereas once it goes
to work in the fields the weather will
deteriorate - and thus it did once
No.1550 had taken empties to the
loading point and was preparing to
reurn with loaded wagons to the
